This accident highlights a continuing problem facing motorcyclists on the roadways of North Carolina. Drivers turning left across the path of motorcyclists is, in our experience, the most common cause of serious motorcycle accidents. Our firm represents several motorcyclists injured or killed in similar accidents. A gentleman named Gary Meek was killed on Sunday when his tri-wheel motorcycle crashed on US 64 in Nash County, North Carolina.
There is very little information available about this accident except that reports indicate that Mr. Meek’s cycle may have lost a tire causing the bike to veer out of control and hit a guardrail. Mr. Meek’s wife was also on the cycle but survived the accident.
This accident is most certainly a terrible loss for the family of Mr. Meek and they have our deepest sympathies. A troubling fact about this accident is that the cycle lost a tire and then veered out of control Depending on the circumstances of the tire failure, there could be a claim against the manufacturer of the tire or cycle relating to a defect in the cycle. In cases such as this, it can be critical to have the cycle evaluated by an engineer to determine the cause of the accident.
