Johnny Lankford Killed in Graham NC Moped Accident

A gentleman named Johnny Lankford was tragically killed in a moped accident near Graham, North Carolina on Sunday night.

The accident happened on Cooper Road at around 6:50 pm.  According to available information, Mr. Lankford was traveling on Cooper Road and was being followed by a second moped.  The second moped rider, Scotty Brown, apparently attempted to pass Mr. Lankford at the same time that Mr. Lankford was attempting a left turn.  The mopeds collided and Mr. Lankford did not survive.  Mr. Brown was hospitalized with hand and wrist injuries.  The NC Highway Patrol is investigating the accident to determine if charges may be brought against Mr. Brown.

This is a very unusual accident in that it involved two mopeds.  Under current North Carolina law, moped riders are not required to maintain any minimum liability insurance.  Therefore, finding insurance coverage for the serious claims in this case will be a unique challenge.  In some cases, a moped rider may be insured under auto policies issued to family members who reside in the same household.  However, a detailed examination of the insurance policies will be necessary to determine the extent of available insurance.
