A terrible accident has resulted in the death of motorcyclist Robert Gillespy of Raleigh.

The accident happened on South Saunders Street on Thursday morning.  Apparently, a woman driving a work van owned y American Gold Label Co. attempted a U-turn and hit a Toyota vehicle which knocked the work van into the path of Mr. Gillespy.  Mr. Gillespy was not able to avoid the collision with the work van.  He was seriously injured and taken to Wakemed where he later passed away.  A friend riding with Mr. Gillespy named Marion Wyatt IV avoided a direct collision only by laying his bike down.  He was also injured.

The driver of the work van, Quiana Alsabry, has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.

This is a terrible accident and it is not clear why Ms. Alsabry failed to yield when attempting the U-turn.  Apparently, toxicology reports that might indicate impairment are pending.  Mr. Gillespy was a 57 year old husband, father and grandfather.  He had apparently only recently bought his Harley Davidson motorcycle that was involved in the accident.
