A tragic accident on Tuesday night in Shelby NC has resulted in the death of a moped rider.

What happened in the accident is very unusual.  According to reports, a police officer stopped the moped rider and a passenger on the moped stepped off at that time.  Shortly after this stop, the moped entered the intersection of Graham Street and Patton Drive and was hit by an SUV.  The driver of the moped was killed.  It is not clear from the limited information available whether the moped or the SUV had the right of way at the intersection.  The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is investigating the accident along with the Shelby Police Department.
