A terrible and tragic accident involving a motorcycle and a petroleum tanker truck on U.S. 52 near Mount Airy, NC has claimed two lives.

The accident happened around 7:30 pm on Sunday evening when the tanker truck pulled out of the parking lot at Cooke Trucking and into the path of the motorcycle.  The motorcycle was driven by John Higginbotham and Ms. Mae Margaret Barker was a passenger on the motorcycle.  They both died as a result of the accident.  According to reports, Ms. Barker was a longtime teacher in Surry County and Stokes County.

It is unclear from the information available on this accident why the tanker truck pulled out into the path of the motorcyclists.  In some cases, video surveillance from the truck stop may provide valuable insight into how and why this accident happened.  Hopefully, the investigating troopers have secured any available video surveillance. Additionally, the on board computer program on the tanker truck should be immediately downloaded to hopefully gather important information about the actions of the truck driver before the accident.  In cases such as this, our firm regularly employs accident reconstruction engineers to quickly gather this critical evidence.  If you or a family member have been involved in an accident such as this, contact the North Carolina motorcycle lawyers at Hendren & Malone for a free consultation.
